There are continued signs of healthy activity in the UK games chart this week, with two new entries fighting for the number one spot. In the end, though, Knights of the Old Republic II
beat Blizzard’s MMORPG World of WarCraft
, with KOTOR
's sequel selling significantly more in its first week than its predecessor - due to the simultaneous release of the PC and Xbox versions.
Despite missing out on the number one spot, World of WarCraft
has still done exceptionally well, with the best first-week sales of any online title in the UK. Britain’s traditionally skeptical attitude towards the PC and online titles makes this less of an accolade than it could have been, but if the game continues to sell well in the coming weeks, it could mark a milestone in the changing tastes of gamers in the UK.
A love for Sonic the Hedgehog seems unlikely ever to alter though, with PS2 sales of Sonic Mega Collection Plus
increasing by 42 percent this week – an impressive achievement for a port of a GameCube retro compilation, especially considering the strength of the opposition this week.
