Officials from Nintendo of Europe have announced that thirty-six new virtual console titles will be released for the Wii during the first quarter of the year, for retro formats the NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Mega Drive (aka Genesis) and Turbografx (aka PC Engine).
Although not all thirty-six titles have been named they include twenty Nintendo titles, seven Turbografx games and nine Mega Drive titles. The Nintendo titles include a number of the company’s most acclaimed games with
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and
Mario Kart 64 for the Nintendo 64 and
Super Mario World for the SNES.
Other third party SNES titles include
Street Fighter II: World Warrior from Capcom and
Super Probotector from Konami (a sanitized version of the classic
Contra III: The Alien Wars). New titles announced for the Turbografx include shoot ‘em-up
Soldier Blade, role-playing game
Double Dungeons and platform game
New Adventure Island.
The Sega titles are largely the same as those
announced for North America yesterday and include
Streets of Rage (long absent from previous offline compilations because of its higher age rating),
Bio-Hazard Battle,
Bonanza Bros. and
Comix Zone. However, arcade conversion
Gain Ground was not included in the list of titles given by Nintendo.
Although titles do vary by country most, if not all, of these titles are expected to be made available at a similar time in North America. In addition, Nintendo has also re-confirmed that European customers registering games and hardware will be able to redeem Wii Points from the Star Catalogue on the European Nintendo website.
