Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) president and CEO Jack Tretton has made his first personal entry on the
newly launched PlayStation.Blog website, with a humble message in which he promises more than 15 games from the company’s own internal studios this year.
He also claims that the PlayStation 3 will see over one hundred individual titles by the end of the year, while indicating that
Heavenly Sword,
Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and
Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools Of Destruction will be some of the lead titles at the E3 Expo next month. Tretton also promised “a few surprises”, implying games (or perhaps even hardware) which have not been previously announced.
In a tacit response to the negative publicity which Sony - and the PlayStation 3 in particular - has endured over recent months, Tretton was also keen to emphasize the technological achievements of previous PlayStation consoles and the brand's enormous influence on the industry.
“We fully realize that past success is no guarantee of future success, but it does give you some perspective,” writes Tretton. “We have to bring the games to market that will showcase what the PS3 can do and ultimately entertain you like no other games have. We need to provide proof of what the PS3 can do for you and work tirelessly to improve the value and justify your investment.”
“We could have easily produced PlayStation 2.5 at a slightly increased price over the older model, and driven some nice profits and marginal innovation for a few years but that’s not how we got where we are today,” he added. “You have to gamble and make major investments in the present that will pay dividends in the future.“
