Today's round-up includes a much-awaited demonstration of the Phantom console, news of a regional game development competition, and an interesting collaboration including the original inventors of the NES Power Glove, as well as the latest product news and job postings.
- The Phantom video game console, long-delayed and rarely seen outside of promotional renderings, got another public airing on the G4 program Attack of the Show. Infinium Labs COO Kevin Bachus, formerly of Microsoft, demonstrated the Phantom's capabilities with a real working model of the system, as opposed to the PC simulations more commonly seen. Bachus acknowledged the controversy over the system's long delay before giving the demo, which revealed the user interface and more details of the game service. The segment is also available online
- The Global Digital City Network is funding a competition open to the somewhat narrow set of entrants living in Dundee City, UK; Chuncheon City, Korea; and Gold Coast City, Australia. Those from one of the three eligible cities are invited to submit in one of four categories: Multimedia New Game Demo, Multimedia Best New Animation, Non-multimedia New Game Concept, and Non-multimedia Best New Artwork. The deadline for submissions is September 8th, 2005, and the competition website
indicates that more cities will soon be added to the list.
- Alliance Distributors Holding Inc. has joined up with Abrams/Gentile Entertainment to produce and distribute videogame-related products. Alliance already distributes game software and peripherals, and is using the partnership as an opportunity to launch their own line of devices. Abrams/Gentile, as IP and technology inventors, have a track record that includes the unique Power Glove for the Nintendo Entertainment System, as featured in the movie The Wizard. Alliance gave no indication of what products the partnership will produce, but Abrams/Gentile's involvement is sure to produce something interesting.
