Nintendo’s domination of the weekly
software charts in Japan has continued through to hardware sales, with Nintendo DS and Wii titles the highest sellers of the week.
DS sales rocketed by 66,000 units to a total of 204,813. Of these sales 173,693 were for the new DSi model and 31,120 for the older DS Lite.
Although certainly the highest the format has recorded for several months, the figures are still around 20,000 units below its totals during last year’s winter gift-giving season.
Buoyed by the success of
Taiko Drum Master Wii, the Wii remained the second highest seller of the week, with sales up almost 35,000 units to a total of 91,641. The PSP remained close behind though, with Sony’s portable seeing sales increase by over 16,500 units to 71,540.
Sales on the other formats saw more modest gains, with the PS3 up only 3,000 units to 33,688. The Xbox 360 increased its total from last week by just under 2,000 units to 11,797. The PlayStation saw sales rise by just under 1,000 units to 6,659.
Overall in the software top 50, there were 24 titles for the Nintendo DS, 15 for the Wii, six for the PSP, two each for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 2, and one for the Xbox 360.
