DS, Wii Sales Enjoy Boost In Japanese Hardware Sales

Following strong game sales, the game hardware market has also enjoyed another buoyant week in Japan - with Nintendo DS and Wii sales both seeing significant increases on the previous week, as the PlayStation 3 sees a new drop in sales - stats within.
Market research firm Media Create has revealed data for weekly hardware sales in Japan for the week ending December 2nd, following details of the software top thirty. With another very strong week in software sales, the hardware market has also enjoyed another buoyant week in Japan. With the success of the latest Professor Layton game, Nintendo DS sales increased by almost 8,000 units to 124,627. The release of Wii Fit saw an even more significant increase in Wii console sales, up over 20,000 units to 74,764. As a result, the Wii was the second best selling console of the week, just ahead of the PSP - which saw sales slip by a few hundred to 74,626. With only two titles in the top fifty this week, PlayStation 3 sales dropped by over 13,000 units to 37,092. Sony’s newest console still kept comfortably above the PlayStation 2, though, which saw sales drop by over 1,000 units to 13,703. Despite top ten success with Assassin’s Creed, Xbox 360 sales also fell, by just under 500 units, to 6,632. Meanwhile, with their lowest ever total for a single week, the Game Boy Advance family of console finally fell into complete irrelevancy in Japan with just 33 sales – just one more than the GameCube.
