Unity-based developer and consultancy Unity Studios and network engine maker Exit Games have partnered together to promote the tandem use of their products for MMO development. The companies are pushing the Unity: Legion development environment, paired with Exit's Photon server and network engine, as a useful combination for developers working on massively multiplayer games. The Legion extension builds on top of the core Unity framework with tools that help handle MMO server maintenance, client code, build processes and game logic across multiple user machines. Photon, on the other hand, is a socket server built on a .NET and C++ base, providing for easy integration with Unity projects. Together, the products make what the companies call "the market's most powerful and easy to use combination for MMOG development with Unity." "Having researched the market for MMO packages, I found that Photon from Exit games was the perfect match for Legion, and that these two in tandem provide the best possible tools for MMO development with Unity," said Unity Studios technical director Lars Kroll Kristensen. "Building an MMOG is a tough challenge and developers should choose their tools carefully," said Christof Wegmann, CEO and Founder of Exit Games. "Legion from Unity Studios plus Exit Games Photon is an ideal combination and the most powerful tool-set one can find to build stunning MMOGs." Free licenses for both Legion and Photon are available from their respective web sites.
