Unity issues leading to delayed Switch launches for some devs

Yooka-Laylee dev Playtonic notes that the Unity 5.6 update fixed some issues but introduced others, further delaying the game’s Switch release.

While porting a game to the Nintendo Switch has been an all-around simple process for some devs, others are reporting that it isn’t all smooth sailing just yet.

The release of Unity 5.6 earlier this year brought with it full support for Nintendo Switch development, but game developers should be aware that some devs have had to delay the Switch versions of their games due to issues following the 5.6 launch.

Yooka-Laylee creator Playtonic is one such developer. The team noted in a recent Kickstarter update that they’ve had to avoid setting the game’s Switch release in stone while they work with Unity to resolve some issues that crept up with 5.6.

As Eurogamer points out, Battle Chasers: Nightwar dev Airship Syndicate noted a similar problem last week, saying that it is waiting on an update to Unity before it can comfortably announce a release date.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that developers should avoid Unity when considering Switch development, especially since the engine has worked well for devs in the past, but it’s always worth keeping a watchful eye on issues like this (and their eventual resolutions) as they spring up.
