2d3 has announced Pixeldust, a new tool that automates the removal of objects from film or video footage and rebuilds the background to replace the removed objects. Pixeldust can remove any or all moving or still foreground objects from a scene and reconstruct the obscured parts of the background. Individual objects can be singled out for removal with a rough matte, leaving the rest of the scene unchanged. Pixeldust uses a specially adapted tracking engine which is completely automatic. The tracking technology builds a detailed understanding of the scene for highly accurate differentiation of foreground elements and background reconstruction in both panning and free camera moves. Pixeldust is schedule to ship in Q4 2002 for the Windows and Linux platforms. Pricing information was not provided.
