Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is now the best-selling video game launch of all time, grossing more than $775 million worldwide in its first five days on sale. The game, developed by Activision's Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games, sold over 6.5 million units in North America and the UK alone in its first 24 hours on sale, with an estimated sell-through of $400 million in these regions on launch day. It also claimed the title as the highest grossing opening week for any entertainment title ever in the UK. Now Activision has revealed that the game has exceeded the worldwide sell-through record of $650 million set by Call of Duty: Black Ops last year. The company also noted that the game has set two new records on Xbox Live. Microsoft recorded 3.3 million unique gamers playing Modern Warfare 3 on launch day, and 1.4 million concurrent players in-game. [NOTE: Activision originally stated that 3.3 million concurrent Modern Warfare 3 players were seen. It has now clarified that that figure was wrong, and the correct figure is 1.4 million.] Robert Kotick, CEO at Activision Blizzard, said, "With $775 million of sales of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 in its first five days, Call of Duty has become the first entertainment property in history to set five-day launch records for three consecutive years across all forms of entertainment." "Life-to-date retail sales for the Call of Duty franchise have exceeded $6 billion worldwide, which makes Call of Duty one of the most valuable entertainment properties in the world."
