Officials from Vivendi Games division Sierra Online officially announced plans to release Battlestar Galactica over Microsoft's popular Xbox Live Arcade service, as well as the PC this fall. The space combat simulation, which is based upon the hit series airing on the Sci Fi channel, is being created by veteran Australian developer Auran (Trainz Railroad Simulator), and will feature both single and multiplayer gameplay as either the humans or Cylons. In addition, in order to ramp up fan anticipation for the game, Xbox Live users can download gamer pictures and theme packs from the show from the Xbox Live Marketplace beginning today. While few details have been released as to the extent to which the game will relate to the popular television show, Sierra officials have revealed that players can expect the game to include ships as well as as missions based on the series. Battlestar Galactica chronicles the last surviving remnants of mankind as they venture through the galaxy on a search for Earth while being pursued by a race of sentient machines known as the Cylons. "We're huge fans of Battlestar Galactica and are thrilled to have the opportunity to create a game inspired by the TV series," said Ed Zobrist, president of Sierra Online. "NBC Universal is working closely with us so that players will be able immerse themselves in the Battlestar Galactica universe and re-live their favorite missions from the TV series."
