What Makes Me Think I'm Suddenly A Game Designer?

After twenty plus years working in games, mostly as a programmer, I suddenly think I have what it takes to be a game designer as well. Am I kidding myself?

Last October I'd been in the games industry for 21 years. I started at as an artist though that only lasted until people who could actually draw entered the industry, the last game where I was actually responsible for the graphics was Populous in 1989.

Other than that little bit of art those 21 years had been almost all programming but this didn't stop me suddenly deciding it was a good idea to drop everything and write a 'little' iPhone game on my own, well, maybe with the help of one of those artists who can actually draw, though I believe they call it modelling or something these days.

The design for my first game is something I will go into in a later blog but it's basically a bunch of sneaky tricks to handle a large, detailed landscape within the limited graphic hardware mated to a nice simple accelerometer based control system that feels 'right'.

Anyway, five months later my 'little' game still isn't out though it is looking and feeling pretty nice and the end is in sight. All that's really left is to put the actual game in, something I intend to do even though it sometimes seems optional on App store games.
