A peek at the metal: Metro dev talks PS4 vs. Xbox One performance

"We may push 40 per cent more pixels per frame on PS4, but it's not 40 per cent better as a result... your own eyes can tell you that."
"We may push 40 per cent more pixels per frame on PS4, but it's not 40 per cent better as a result... your own eyes can tell you that."
- 4A Games' chief technical officer Oles Shishkovstov In a new interview by Digital Foundry at Eurogamer, 4A Games' chief technical officer Oles Shishkovstov gets into the nuts and bolts of the performance differential between the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 from a hardware perspective. To make a sweeping generalization, the PlayStation 4 is generally regarded as more capable, and often has been the home to better-performing versions of multiplatform titles. However, Shishkovstov says it isn't that simple -- and notes that Microsoft's SDKs have been improving by leaps and bounds. He tackles topics like the console's ESRAM -- "in practice I've seen only a few cases where it becomes a limiting factor" -- and what impact the return of GPU power that was once reserved for the Kinect has on system performance. Graphics programmers will want to check out the full interview.
