Visual Effects Artist, Obsidian Entertainment

Location: Irvine, CA This artist will be responsible for creating a wide range of, real time in-game, class combat skill and spell FX. They will need to have a fantastic imagination, a love of game and movie VFX, and a solid grasp of the principles of animation as well as the physics of things in motion. The FX artist must have skill in creating and optimizing textures and geometry needed for real time game FX. This artist should be well-versed in FX related tools -- Photoshop, After Effects, etc. Responsibilities Create a wide range of character class combat visual effects. Collaborate with animators and designers to support the effects needs of class development and to deliver high-quality combat visuals. Work closely with Art Director and Game Designers to ensure the visual target of effects are met or exceeded. Actively participate in technical and aesthetic problem solving discussions. Estimate time required to deliver effects in measured steps, through an iterative process. Complete the work within furnished estimates. Requirements A demo reel demonstrating personal VFX achievements. Work must clearly demonstrate exceptional ability in the areas of artistic and stylistic quality. Proficiency with Maya. Experience working with next-gen shaders and materials in game engines, within the context of effects creation. Ability to rapidly master proprietary tools and development pipelines. Independently resourceful and able come up with creative and timely solutions. Able to manage time effectively to insure timely delivery of work. Receptive to art direction and critiques from project art leads. Strong organizational and communication skills. Passion for gaming. Pluses Worked on previous game titles, either console, online, or mobile platforms. Working knowledge of 3DSMax. An interest in video game theory and design. Portfolio Requirements An online VFX reel. Portfolio Pluses Examples of non-VFX animation skills.
