Ian Milham’s transitioning from the depths of space to deep and dark tombs. Crystal Dynamics has announced that the former Dead Space art director has been hired to direct the next Tomb Raider game.

Though no new game has officially been announced, Crystal Dynamics said in a statement today that Milham would be taking over the role of game director on the Tomb Raider franchise. For his part, Milham adds that he’s always been in love with adventure games, and is eager to join the studio for Lara Croft’s next adventure.

“I’ve admired Crystal’s work for a while now, as they continue to deliver top notch narrative and spectacle, coupled with deep systems and player choice,” Milham says.

While known for his contributions to Dead Space, Milham went on to serve as creative director for Battlefield 4 and Battlefield: Hardline while at EA.

If you’re not familiar with Milham’s work, he’s one of the notable people in the game industry who’ve made the shift from art director to game director over the course of their career. In 2011, he gave a GDC talk about his work on Dead Space 2, describing how EA sought to add variety and memorability to the second game in the sci-fi horror series.

Gamasutra and GDC are sibling organizations under parent UBM Tech.
