London. January 20th, 2022 – During the midst of the pandemic, a team of young people from across the UK banded together through the Kickstart scheme; as they have developed their own highly personal game project. Approaching the end of their university degrees, these young graduates were tasked with the challenge of breaking into the highly competitive games industry. The Kickstart scheme provided a foot in the door for these young graduates, and the chance to gain invaluable experience in a working environment. This golden opportunity takes them one step closer to their dream of working in the games industry.

Alex, the sole artist for the team and a recent Animation graduate from Middlesex University, discussed the challenge of breaking into the industry. ‘I don't think I would have had an opportunity like this, where someone can afford to take on a graduate without work experience and have faith that I can pull it off without Kickstart’. Similarly, Perthshire born, lead programmer Stefan noted, ‘Often during a degree, you’ll work on multiple projects without necessarily finishing one. Even after four years at the University of the West of Scotland, I still don’t necessarily have the experience of completing a development cycle, so this has been an amazing opportunity which I want to continue with after the Kickstart scheme ends.’.

A side effect of the pandemic has been the encouragement for the team to work remotely under covid restrictions, with team members in Scotland, Leeds, London and Dorset. Lead Writer Sebastian, finished a Game Design degree at Southbank during the pandemic, ‘Not many places were hiring and I also couldn't travel to work. From working from home at university I became used to home working’. Not only would the team not exist without this remote working opportunity, it also provided the perfect opportunity to remain active and engaged with their careers during a challenging time for the next generation.

The company’s founder Yoyu, was inspired to form this team of young, aspiring game developers after spotting the dormant potential in the Kickstart scheme, during a drought of opportunities for young people. The team’s immense growth during the pandemic has proved their adaptability under huge restraints, as three graduates fresh out of university demonstrated the makings of a fully-fledged game development team in a matter of months.

With a shared love of in-person, murder mystery games, the team decided to pursue adapting this concept for the video game world. With the goal of giving players the enjoyment of playing pre-written stories, as well as the capability to write their own stories within the game’s setting. Now, with a contract extension for two members and a hopeful break into the industry for another, the result is an empowered, hopeful and ambitious group of young people with a positive outlook for their futures.
