Scottish Games Network | Blackadders, one of Scotland’s leading law firms, has thrown its support behind Scottish Games Week by assuming the role of its official legal partner. Following on from their support of the first-ever Scottish Games Week in 2022, the firm is back this year and is keen to get stuck into the new legal issues coming into play for the industry, such as the Online Safety Bill.
While it isn’t an aspect of the games industry that’s widely discussed, the legal side of game development is a complex, ever-evolving beast that grows new heads with each new stride our technology takes. Most are aware of the seemingly endless question of loot box regulation, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg, particularly as the growing popularity of mobile games draws more and more children into the video games ecosystem.
Blackadders are on the cutting edge when it comes to this area of the law, with their Video Games team providing specialist advice for developers of all sizes, be they indie studios or world-beating AAA goliaths. The firm is keen to extend the same gold standard of service they provide to their other clients to those in the games industry, and the industry in turn has been quick to respond, in no small part due to the turbulent technological times we find ourselves living in. Kirk Dailly, Corporate and Commercial Partner at the firm, had this to say of its involvement in Scottish Games Week 2023:
“We are excited to once again be named official legal partner of Scottish Games Week. It was an inspirational event for our Video Games team to be part of last year, mixing with industry leaders from across the globe. We’re at a really interesting juncture in games, with the Online Safety Bill coming into force amidst other regulatory changes which are requiring developers to factor safety and privacy considerations into game design. We look forward to exploring all of that and much more across the week. It’s a real privilege to be involved.”
Dailly will be taking part in a roundtable discussion session at the Industry Conference section of the event entitled ‘Safeguarding Children In Gaming: NSPCC, Ethos, And Legal Perspectives.’ This is a vital conversation, covering the ways in which developers are currently protecting their young players, and the way in which they, and the law, can do more to do so going forward.
This is just one of the incredible sessions being held at Scottish Games Week 2023. Check out the event website for a full run-down of the programme, and then jump over to Citizen Ticket to secure your tickets while you still can!
