Vicon, the motion-capture device and camera-making company has announced that it will kick off a competitive film festival with a $10,000 grand prize at Siggraph next week. Dubbed Vicon Film Festival: A Celebration of All Things Motion Capture and Animation, the event will allow professionals and students of digital animation to submit short original films between two and five minutes long. These films must use motion capture data provided via Vicon’s Film Festival website. The deadline to submit a film is January 31, 2008, with judging beginning March 1, 2008. According to the company’s announcement, selected films will be posted on YouTube so they can be voted on publicly, and the top 10 films will then be rated by a panel of judges. The winners will be announced next summer. For additional information about Vicon’s competition, interested parties can visit the Vicon Film Festival site.
