Macrovision Corporation has announced that InstallShield 11, a leading product for software installations, now enables small and medium-sized software companies to take advantage of the anti-piracy benefits enjoyed by the world’s largest software companies. Through the new InstallShield Activation Service, the InstallShield 11 installation tool offers integrated software production activation and also helps software publishers target major growth areas in software, including Linux, Web Services and server installations. According to a global software piracy study conducted by the Business Software Alliance and International Data Corporation, 36 percent of the software installed on computers worldwide was pirated in 2003, representing nearly $29 billion of lost revenues for software publishers. The BSA maintains that unlicensed usage within the enterprise and B2B software markets is rampant, both internationally and in the U.S., where the piracy rate is estimated at 23 percent. Using InstallShield 11, software publishers can add licensing protection and access to the InstallShield Activation Service for their products at the same time they wrap them for installation. This capability is based upon FLEXnet Publisher technology used by large software vendors such as Autodesk and Citrix. InstallShield 11 and InstallShield Activation Service allow small and medium-sized software vendors to implement an end-to-end activation solution with just a few clicks, instead of an extensive administration and development effort required for the full featured FLEXnet Publisher technology. Customers of InstallShield Activation Service also have the added flexibility of upgrading to the full featured FLEXnet Publisher should they want to use a wider range of capabilities.
