New Super Mario Bros for the Nintendo DS has returned to the top of the Japanese video game sales charts for the second time, with its almost unparalleled run of success seeing unit sales above 100,000 for the ninth consecutive week. The game’s notable boost in sales over the previous week can be attributed to the release of the pink version of the DS Lite, which, despite the time of year, still managed to draw significant queues outside major game stores. Released at the same time was Nintendo’s latest Touch Generations title, the interactive cookbook Shaberu! DS Oryouri Navi, the impressive 126,530 unit debut of which could suggest that it may enjoy the same longevity in the charts as the other Touch Generations titles. Bandai Namco’s Battle Stadium D.O.N was also a strong performer, with joint sales of the PlayStation 2 and GameCube versions amounting to 84,484. Indeed the GameCube version has performed surprisingly well, although the game’s similarity to Super Smash Bros., with characters from Dragon Ball Z, One Piece and Naruto, do fit well with the console’s demographic in Japan. In terms of hardware sales, the release of the pink version of the DS Lite saw sales for the format rocket to 268,797 units (including 6,344 of the original hardware). Thanks to the release of anime license game Bleach 3, the PSP held steady with 35,938 units sold, while the PlayStation 2 stood at 22,288 units. The Game Boy Advance family of consoles accounted for 4,383 sales, with the Xbox 360 at 1,472 and the GameCube on 1,076. For the first time ever, the original Xbox sold zero units, rather than its usual amount in the low double figures.
