Hiroshi Yamauchi, former president of Nintendo and still the company’s majority shareholder, has revealed that he will be suggesting to Nintendo executives that the company funds and creates its own animated film project. Yamauchi, who still contributes to the company as an advisor, indicated he would be making the suggestion at Nintendo’s next management meeting in October. He did not state, though, whether the project would use computer generated imagery or traditional cell animation. The project is to be based on the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu - a collection of 100 short poems by various different Japanese poets, written between the 7th and 13th centuries. Yamauchi became the president of the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu Project Foundation last November and indicated at the time that he would attempt to promote the collection in as many different media as possible. Despite the subject matter, Yamauchi claims the proposed movie would also be appreciated in the West.
