World Machine has announced version 1.0 of its terrain generator, now available for download. The software offers capabilities in three main areas: terrain abilities, realtime 3D previewing, and its explorer mode. In the area of terrain generation, World Machine offers several features. The software's erosion capabilities are flexible -- you can lightly weather a range of mountains or reduce them to piled rock with the adjustment of a single slider. It has a large variety of shape & noise generator styles, a number of height field effect filters, high resolution (up to 8192x8192), fast building, full 32-bit single-precision terrain detail maintained throughout the pipeline, and macro devices that allow for user-created effects. World Machine's realtime 3D preview allows users to design the terrain they want by being able to see the changes they're making. Every time they adjust a slider or change a setting, they will see their changes in realtime 3D. Finally, Explorer Mode offers in a new way of finding terrain features. Users can fly, walk, drive, or teleport around the virtual world they've generated to search for the piece of landscape that best suits their needs. World Machine is available for free download, as well as standard and professional versions, from the company's website.
