Scrapping the tradition of naming each new installment of its operating system for the year of its release, the OS formerly known as “Whistler” will be sold as Windows XP. The “XP” is intended to stand for experience, a notion that Microsoft will reinforce by using Jimi Hendrix track “Are You Experienced?” in its ad campaign. Windows XP will be launched in the second half of 2001.
