Officials from Sony Computer Entertainment have announced that sales of the PlayStation 2 console have passed 1 million units in South Korea. This is two months ahead of the company’s stated goal of reaching 1 million units by the end of the year. South Korea has become one of the most hotly contested emerging markets in recent months, with Microsoft putting considerable effort into promoting the Xbox console there. Although the Xbox has had some success there, particularly thanks to South Korea’s fondness for online gaming. Rrecently released figures from Microsoft put the Xbox installed user base for the whole of Asia at just 1.3 million – although specific figures solely for South Korea have not been revealed.
