Softimage has announced Softimage|Behavior 1.1, the latest version of its behavior animation tool for creating "intelligent" characters and animated crowds. Featuring new support for Linux and enhancements to the API, version 1.1 also includes the following features:

  • A real-time character engine, featuring IK, dynamic animation synthesis, animation playback, dynamic path-planning and obstacle avoidance.

    • Dynamic motion synthesis in real time. Characters can generate their own animation at run time.

    • Real-time behavioral animation makes characters flexible, since they require no previous knowledge of their environment. Sets can be made and remade around characters, and they will modify their behavior accordingly.

    • Interactive previewing, feedback and recording of animation.

    • Real-time shader effects are fully supported.

    • Recorded choreography can be exported to the dotXSI file format, which supports settings for cameras, lights, materials, skeletons, IK, meshes and more. Softimage|Behavior 1.1 is currently in beta, and is scheduled for release in June. It will be priced at $14,995.
