Softimage announced Softimage|XSI 3.5 today, which offers a number of new features and peformance enhancements over version 3.0. The new capabilities and refinements encompass changes to the interface, modeling, texturing, animation, simulation, SDK and rendering tools. These enhancements include:
Peformance improvements in scaling/rotation/translation operations, and new SRT contextual manipulators, including interactive manipulation of pivots
Automatic symmetrizing of polygons, with UV and texture inheritance for faster modeling
DirectX and CG vertex and pixel shaders supported in the UI
Flattening of UVs for easier texturing
Normal mapping and shadow maps for real-time environments
Accurate hair generation from subdivision surfaces
Expanded interoperability with Avid editing and finishing products, including the ability for animators to link and transfer multiple render passes to an Avid|DS system via the integrated compositor in Softimage|XSI 3.5.
Version 3.5 will be available with native support for Japanese. Softimage also announced new versions of its processing and rendering products, Softimage|XSI Batch and Softimage|XSI BatchUniversal, which automate batch processing and batch rendering in production pipelines. Softimage|XSI 3.5 for Windows and Linux is currently in beta testing and will be available in June. Suggested retail pricing starts at $6,750, with upgrade pricing as low as $1,495 for a limited time.
