SensAble Technologies, makers of haptic devices and the ClayTools plug-in, have announced the version 2.0 release of the OpenHaptics toolkit and the OpenHaptics Academic Edition with special licensing. The latest version of OpenHaptics toolkit, which delivers haptics and true 3D navigation to applications, provides new functionality at both the Haptic Device API (HDAPI) and Haptic Library API (HLAPI) levels. HLAPI performance is increased up to five times with optimized applications, such as HapticExtender plug-ins, and programmer productivity enhancements. Version 2 of the OpenHaptics Academic Edition is free to students and faculty associated with any academic institution worldwide that has purchased a SensAble Phantom haptic device. The Academic Edition includes the same features and functionality as the OpenHaptics toolkit version 2 and runs on Windows XP and 2000, Linux, and Mac OS X. Demonstrations of both products are available at SensAble’s booth at Siggraph, #1360.
