Sega’s long running process of expansion in the West has seen the company signing British based mobile games developer Rockpool Games as a partner for the creation of multiple games based upon the company’s major brands. In addition to handling mobile versions of Sega’s various franchises, Rockpool will also handle quality assurance, porting and certification for Sega Europe’s other developments. Rockpool recently announced the launch of its own casual gaming company named SoGoPlay, but the deal with Sega appears to be restricted solely to the mobile gaming space. Rockpool’s managing director, Paul Gouge commented, “We’re very proud to have been selected by such a phenomenal company as Sega and we’re excited to be a key part of their further advance into Mobile. Sega brands are the part of this history of the gaming industry and we’re delighted that they chose Rockpool as the developer most capable of delivering their objectives”. Sega UK’s managing director, Alan Pritchard added, “The expansion to mobile is a key strategic move by Sega and we selected a company that can deliver games that are worthy of such massive brands. The team at Rockpool are the best-in-the-business and we have no doubt that they’ll help us mirror our success in the console world to the mobile platform.” The partnership follows a number of high profile acquisitions from Sega, including of British developers Creative Assembly and Sports Interactive, and numerous development deals with North American studios including Secret Level, Obsidian, Petroglyh and Silicon Knights. It also follows a suggestion from Sega Europe boss Mike Hayes last month that the company was still looking to acquire two to three new studios in the near future.
