Sony representatives have revealed that the basic (DESR-5000) version of their PSX multimedia device will retail for less than $800 in the US. A price for the larger DESR-7000, with a 250Gb hard drive instead of a 160Gb device, has not yet been revealed. However, since the pricing seems to be very similar to that in Japan a figure of below $900 is expected – if the more expensive unit is to be released outside of Japan at all. Western release dates for either machine, which combine PS2, DVD burner and TiVO-style functionality, are unknown at this time. The PSX goes on sale in Japan at the end of this year.
