Proksim Software announced that it has ported its networking engine for multiplayer online games, Net-Z, to the PS2. Net-Z includes features for increasing the performance of a networked game, including data extrapolation and anticipation techniques for optimizing the use of bandwidth by sending less data over the network. Net-Z also provides game developers with tools to combat latency effects. Net-Z for PlayStation 2 also can create serverless games, allowing PlayStation 2 users to spontaneously join or quit games at any time without the need for a central server, thus eliminating the single point of failure. Net-Z for PlayStation 2 will be available to qualified developers in a closed beta program in Q2 2001, with the final version shipping in the Q3. Developers interested in participating in the Beta Program should contact Proksim Software's Sales Department at +1-512-493-5758 or [email protected].
