Officials from Vicon announced that Activision has purchased a 48-camera Vicon MX motion capture system, more than doubling the company's motion capture capabilities, and providing Activision with dedicated in-house motion capture capabilities that most recently were used in the development of Call of Duty 3. The Vicon MX system allows Activision to record multiple performers in large capture volumes with a high degree of reliability and detail. Call of Duty 3 specifically saw Activision completing full-body and detailed hand capture simultaneously on up to eight performers, with complex character interactions, elaborate props and even simulated water. “In evaluating motion capture solutions and manufacturers, it was clear that Vicon was making the big push,” said Activision's director of motion capture Matt Karnes. “I like the focus of Vicon; I like its hardware, its software and its people. I like the fact that they are production minded and have product development paired up with real-world production.” Karnes added Activision's workflow is further helped through the use of Vicon iQ and House of Moves Diva software, both of which are used for data handling at the "back end." Motion capture solutions from Vicon include high-resolution, high-frame-rate cameras built by Vicon specifically for motion tracking. Vicon's next-generation Vicon MX real-time optical motion capture systems usher in ultra-high-resolution, true gray scale processing, virtually artifact-free capture with Vicon MX 40, a four-million-pixel gray scale motion capture camera.
