NPD Reports 2001 Videogame Sales Up Substantially
The NPD Group has released information about retail sales of videogame hardware, software, and accessories in the U.S.
The report shows that sales in these areas are up 18 percent for the first quarter of 2001 compared to the same period in 2000. Unit sales were also up 5 percent for the quarter compared to the first three months of last year. Videogame console sales did particularly well, up 146 percent in dollars and 49 percent in units compared to last year, driven in large part to demand for Sony's Playstation 2 and price drops for the Sega Dreamcast. Following are the results in all categories: Category / % Dollar Change / % Unit Change Consoles / 146% / 49% Console Software / -7 / -3 Console Accessories / 18 / 4 Portable Video Hardware / -24 / -22 Portable Video Software / 12 / 14 Portable Video Accessories / 26 / 38 Total / 18 / 5
