STMicroelectronics, a provider of System-on-Chip (SoC) solutions for digital consumer applications, and Imagination Technologies, announced their intent to co-develop a new mobile multimedia entertainment platform based on Imagination Technologies' PowerVR graphics technology. The Pocket Multimedia platform will integrate the PowerVR MBX chip, a mobile multimedia processor which supports 2D/3D and video acceleration, with STMicroelectronics' SuperH, a low-power RISC processor core used in microcontrollers. Of note to the game development industry, the integration of SuperH and PowerVR MBX will support 2D and 3D gaming while consuming low amounts of power. The Pocket Multimedia platform will be available for OEMs to license, but no information was provided as to its expected delivery to the market, nor about licensees.
