Nevercenter announced the release of version 2 of its 3D modeling application, Silo, which introduces brush-based displacement painting fully integrated into a traditional modeling environment, LSCM UV unwrapping, and major improvements to the software's toolset, interface, speed, and workflow. Described as a “core rewrite” of the studio's 3d modeling and sculpting application, Silo 2.0 was developed over a two year span, during which the company notes that every aspect of the software was evaluated and improved “to allow complete integration of the new features and prepare Silo for future growth.” Key to new version is the inclusion of integrated displacement painting, which preserves displacement data that isn't directly affected by topology changes as users switch between brushes and tools. Explained Nevercenter development director John Plewe: “Preserving displacement data is critical if an art director or client needs a significant change to the model. It also frees the brushes for use throughout the creative process. You can detail an eye before building the mouth, or keep a detailed ear on hand to attach to different models. You can also do things like use the Move brush to quickly adjust proportions on a low-poly model.” Among the other new features added in the update include expanded capabilities for core modeling tools, comprehensive scene management via the scene editor, a completely redesigned interface, sticky key functionality for tools, extensive symmetry and mirroring options, enhanced polygonal modeling, surface snapping, and improved numerical input. "Everyone is waiting for the perfect modeling application which has the power and ease of brush-based displacement painting, but also all of the tools necessary to really build a usable polygonal model," said Nevercenter president Tom Plewe. "Silo now presents the most complete marriage of displacement painting and traditional modeling available."
