Alias|Wavefront has released a new version of its Maya Personal Learning Edition, the free version of Maya which gives people an opportunity to learn how the application works. As with the previous version, there are a number of restrictions to Maya PLE: it displays a watermark on images, uses a special non-commercial file format, does not ship with the Maya API and cannot be used with standard plug-ins. Maya 4.5 PLE includes the following enhancements over the earlier version:

  • The watermark is no longer visible in wireframe mode

    • The ability to import different data types, including files from the commercial version of Maya

    • The addition of tools found in Maya Complete 4.5, like new modeling tools, subdivision surfaces, integrated 3D paint and various user interface and workflow enhancements. Maya 4.5 Personal Learning Edition can be downloaded for free from the link below, and is available for Mac OS X, Windows 2000 Professional and Windows XP. There is also a "Learning Maya | Beginner's Guide" package which can be purchased for $19.99 at the Alias|Wavefront online store. It contains a one-hour DVD learning guide with English, French, German, Japanese and Korean language tracks, an introduction to Maya booklet and a Maya 4.5 Personal Learning Edition CD.
