Marlin Studios has rolled out its "Seamless Textures 8 - Absolute Metal Surfaces" CD-ROM, created by artist/photographer Sebastien Houde. The product is the eleventh in a series of photorealistic, seamlessly tileable texture libraries created for use by 2D and 3D graphics artists. The royalty-free library is composed of mostly industrial metal textures, with such typical categories as gratings, painted metals, rusted metals, patterned metals, and a unique collection of ten textures containing transparency. As a free bonus collection of 129 high-resolution stock photos of scenes where metals are heavily depicted is also included. The photos can be used as backgrounds in 3D scenes, reference material for artistic composition or inspiration for scene development. The texture library also includes a high detailed, royalty-free 3D mesh of a Refinery, which retails at Viewpoint, Inc. for $695. Houde not only photographed and post processed the textures, he also did extensive research on the subject of metals, by studying metallurgy books and consulting prominent metallurgists. He created color-swatch textures of the 57 metals in the Periodic Table, which allows artists to add metals with exact colors to their art. When these swatches are loaded into a graphics program, an artist can then add layers, bump maps, lighting, shininess and other properties to achieve the desired look. The Marlin Studios "Seamless Textures 8 - Absolute Metal Surfaces" two CD-ROM set sells for $159 plus shipping and handling. The library can be ordered online at the Marlin Studios web site below, or by telephone, secure fax or mail.
