Lithtech has improved its Development System taking it to version 3.1, and bringing multiple enhancements to its technologies and tools for creating 3D games and software applications. The Development System version 3.1 includes a Maya environment exporter that allows developers to create and texture terrain and world geometry within version 3 of Maya. It contains numerous improvements to the edit tool (used to create 3D environments, worlds and levels) including curved surface support, improved tab system, and icons as well as the ability to view textured models in the editor. In addition, it includes Discreet 3D Studio Max v. 4 skin support, allowing animators to create skeletally animated models using the skin modifier. Version 3.0 of the Lithtech Development System featured a new distributed object system that provided a highly C++-specific mechanism for declaring distributed objects and setting distributed item attributes. With v. 3.1, distributed game objects can be built from simple source text that describes the game object with Lithtech's object definition data, a format that is C++-programmer-friendly, but language-independent. Other enhancements include a redesigned networking module, an upgraded physics subsystem, a new render styles viewer, a 2D window toolkit, and the default sound system now uses DirectX 8 instead of the Miles Sound System. The Miles Sound System can still be used, but it is no longer shipped with the Lithtech Development System and is not enabled by default.
