LithTech has announced that it is launching the RealArcade Development System, a special version of the LithTech Development System for use by developers creating games for RealNetworks' RealArcade, a new platform the digital distribution of PC games. In this exclusive agreement between LithTechand RealNetworks, a free version of the LithTech Development System will be licensed to game developers creating titles for RealArcade. According to the companies, the RealArcade Development System will be the first time that game developers will be able to add streaming audio and video into 3D game environments using RealAudio and RealVideo. In addition to RealAudio and RealVideo playback, the system also includes compression techniques designed to reduce the overall size of downloadable game files. The first title powered by the RealArcade Game Development System from LithTech is an action game called Tex Atomic's Big Bot Battles. RealNetworks plans to roll out the RealArcade consumer service during the second quarter of this year.
