Kelseus announced that in early March it will release Version 1 of Cloth, a new plug-in for 3D Studio Max. The plug-in is designed to produce highly realistic animation of clothes on animated figures and objects. The plug-in handles collisions that can take into account all of the cloth geometry that collides with another object -- not just the vertices. It handles stretch resistant cloth for realistic behavior, collisions with solid objects, with other cloth, air resistance and realistic physical properties including friction, damping and forces of stretch and bending. You can let a garment settle onto a figure so that it is in a natural position at the start of an animation. Groups of vertices can be constrained to follow other MAX objects and geometry in the scene and can be constrained to move along curves to produce curtain rail type effects (using MAX Shape objects). Diagnostics are included that can detect and correct initial intersections between a cloth and it's collision objects, to simplify the task of initially positioning clothing on figures. In addition, Different material values can be applied to different parts of a cloth, to model cuffs, seams, etc. Cloth works as a modifier and so can be applied to virtually any object and is fully integrated into the MAX environment. It offers full integration with Max Dynamic Effects such as the Wind and Gravity Space Warps. It also maintains libraries of cloth materials, which can be reused between scenes. Pricing for Cloth will be released on March 6 when the plug-in is made available.
