For the first time in several months, the majority of games in the Japanese game sales chart are not Nintendo DS titles, with the PlayStation 2 accounting for five titles versus four. Three of the top ten titles sold over 100,000 units, although the 327,298 tally for Koei’s Samurai Warriors sequel at number one was below expectations, and well down on the approximately 626,000 launch of its predecessor. At number two, role-playing game Suikoden V sold 135,289, also down on the approximately 174,000 first week total of its immediate predecessor. Nippon Ichi Software’s Disgaea sequel, though, easily outdid the first week sales of the first game in the series with 104,059 unit sales, making it one of the company’s biggest sellers to date next to Phantom/Makai Kingdom. Elsewhere in the top ten, Capcom’s Monster Hunter 2 experienced an unexpectedly sharp fall from the number one spot, while Sega’s racing title Initial D: Street Stage performed relatively well for a PSP title with 51,144 units sold. In terms of hardware sales, the Nintendo DS managed to stay on top despite continued stock problems, with 47,462 units sold. The launch of the DS Lite this week is already reported to be a sell out, suggesting a huge rise in market share for next week’s charts, likely followed by another period of stock shortages. The PSP was in second place with 31,742 units sold, followed by the PlayStation 2 at 24,104 and the Game Boy Advance family of consoles at 8,252. The GameCube registered 1,836 unit sales, while the Xbox 360 managed just 1,203, continuing its very poor Japanese performance.
