Pokemon Platinum has smashed first week sales records for the Nintendo DS in Japan, with almost 1 million units sold in just two days. Despite going on sale a day later than the other new entries in the chart, the game sold a total of 963,000 units over the weekend. With sales of the previous Pokemon Diamond and Pearl (of which the game is an expanded edition – in the manner of Pokemon Yellow compared to Crystal and Emerald) split between the two SKUs, this made Platinum the fastest selling single format Nintendo DS game ever. After some slower weeks, there were a large number of other new entries in the chart, with the second highest being Konami’s Quiz Magic Academy DS at number two with 119,000 units sold. Based on a series of coin-op machines, the game – which has its own spin-off anime – is a multiplayer trivia game set in a school for magic. The third highest new entry, at number three, is Square Enix’s Infinite Undiscovery, with 90,000 unit sold. The game is part of Microsoft’s three pronged assault on the Japanese market this week, along with a restock of Xbox 360 hardware and price cuts across all models. According to early Enterbrain data this was enough to see 360 console sales beat both the PlayStation 3 and Wii for the week. Also new at number four is manga and anime tie-in One Piece Unlimited Cruise: Episode 1 for the Wii. The second part of Namco Bandai’s new action series is already scheduled for release later in the year. The final new entry in the top ten is fellow anime tie-in D.Gray-man: Sousha no Shikaku from Konami. The new action title is one of two PlayStation 2 games in the top ten this week.
