GarageGames announced a new commercial licensing option for its Torque Game Engine, aimed at getting the engine in the hands of larger development studios. GarageGames has thus far targeted Torque at the indie market, licensing the engine to independent developers for $100. To qualify as an indie developer, a company had to have less than $500,000 a year in annual income between the developer and publisher. The new licensing option grants a Torque commercial license to studios not meeting that requirement, for a licensing fee of $10,000 upfront per title, with no back-end fees. Torque started life as the technology behind Dynamix/Sierra/Vivendi´s products Tribes, Starsiege, and Tribes 2. Torque supports many industry standard content creation tools for 3D modeling and animation, it contains a terrain generation and object placement toolkit, uses a drag-and-drop GUI creator, and features TorqueScript -- a scripting language similiar to C++.
