Lighting effect technology firm Geomerics has announced that former Sony Computer Entertainment Europe chairman and CEO Chris Deering has been appointed to the company's board as one of its non-executive directors. Highly respected for his successful launch of the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 in European markets, Deering retired from Sony in December 2005 to spend more time with his family in the U.S. Last year the industry veteran also joined the board of Guitar Hero publisher RedOctane in a similar role as one of that company's non-executive directors. Commenting on the appointment, Geomerics CEO Gary Lewis added that he would be “hard pressed to think of another person with his level of experience in the industries our target market supplies.” Geomerics is most recognized for its dynamic lighting solution Enlighten, which was earlier this year integrated into Epic's popular Unreal Engine 3 middleware. According to Geomerics, Enlighten alters the way lighting is handled in games by allowing more dynamic lighting effects to be computed at run time. The tech was recently demonstrated during the SIGGRAPH 2007 technology event, which the newly appointed Deering called an “ideal stage” for showcasing the technology. “Our aim there was to show how Geomerics’ Enlighten is capable of coping with the creative lighting demands of the most computer-intensive industries in the entertainment sector,” said Deering. “This is thanks to Enlighten’s robust and versatile software design, our emphasis on straightforward functionality and most importantly, the superb naturalistic results that it generates with ease.”
