Dolby Laboratories today announced its new surround sound system, Dolby Pro Logic IIx. The new system is designed to convert any standard stereo or 5.1 surround sound audio signal into full 6.1 or 7.1 surround sound, for an enhanced listening experience. Although many of the features are designed for enhancing the listening experience of music and movies, the new system also includes a special mode just for games, which the company says “delivers full-impact special effects signals panned to the surrounds.” Dolby’s press release states that a variety of DSP implementations are being developed to support Pro Logic IIx (including chips from Cirrus Logic, Fujitsu, Yamaha, and Analog Devices), though no specific design wins in audio cards have been announced.
