Disney has today announced details of the long-discussed Disney Epic Mickey, which was properly unveiled for the Wii earlier this month. The game, which is being developed by famed designer Warren Spector’s Junction Point Studios in Austin, Texas, surrounds Mickey’s struggle with Oswald the Rabbit, Disney’s first cartoon star. Oswald was replaced in Disney's lineup by Mickey due to Walt Disney losing the rights to the former character. Disney Epic Mickey appears to blend platforming action with some RPG elements, showcasing events which can alter the world and story. In the game, which "blurs reality and fantasy," Yed Sid, originally a nickname for the sorcerer in “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” has created a world in which discarded Disney characters may live. Oswald becomes the first inhabitant, and helps future discarded characters transition into that world. But over time, he becomes jealous of Mickey’s popularity, and when Mickey makes “an innocent yet terrible mistake,” and threatens the safety of Oswald and Yed Sid’s world, Mickey must enter the cartoon ghetto to make things right. The idea for the game originated in Disney Interactive Studio’s Think Tank some years ago, alongside concepts like the Jupiter-developed Spectrobes series. Spector, who adapted and refined the project, said, "Mickey is an adventurous and rambunctious mouse. I want to bring his personality to the forefront, place him in a daunting world and connect his spirited character with video game players worldwide. Ultimately, each player decides for him- or herself what makes Mickey cool." Players make this decision through a “good and evil” play system that allows players to alternately use paint and paint thinner to create or destroy, using the Wii Remote. This will have ramifications in the world, and also affect Mickey’s physical appearance and abilities. Disney plans to release Disney Epic Mickey for Wii in Fall of 2010.
