Curious Labs is now shipping Poser 5, the latest version of the company's 3D character animation tool. Poser 5's new features include:

  • The FireFly renderer, a hybrid micro-polygon and ray-trace rendering engine with subdivision surface rendering of polygons, which enables render-time polygon smoothing, displacement mapping, 3D motion blur, depth-of-field effects, ray-traced refraction and reflection, procedural textures, shader trees with material nodes, dynamic hair with growth and styling, dynamic cloth with physics and parameter-controlled attributes, and photo-based facial mapping.

    • The Morph Putty tool, for interactive sculpting and manipulation of facial expressions.

    • Hierarchical Parameters Palette with parameter grouping functionality.

    • Hierarchical libraries with support for multiple Runtime folders.

    • All new 3D human figures with fully articulated hands and feet, featuring photorealistic texture maps and facial morphs.

    • Collision detection support. Poser 5 is initially be available for Windows; details about a Macintosh version will be announced later this autumn. Poser 5 is available at a street price of $349.
