During an awards ceremony at the BREW 2006 Conference, held at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego, wireless development company Qualcomm Incorporated announced the winners of its BREW 2006 Developer Awards for cellphone applications, including awards for Electronic Arts' Need for Speed Underground 2 and Glu Mobile's Zuma. The BREW 2006 Developer Awards program consists of nine categories that span a range of applications from communications and information to games and entertainment. Entries were evaluated based on several criteria such as ease of use, originality, commercial viability and overall "wow factor." In addition, conference attendees were given the opportunity to vote for their favorite application in the People's Choice award. Game-related winners of the awards included Electronic Arts' Need for Speed Underground 2 for Best Game Application, and Zuma by Glu Mobile - the casual game conversion was named as the overall winner of the People's Choice Award at the event. Other non-game awards went to KDDI and Navitime Japan's EZ Naviwalk for Best Up and Coming Application, Guangzhou Jinpeng Group's Chifeng Mobile e-Government System for Best Business Application, LOC-AID Technologies' LOC-AID People for Best Location-Based Service Application, and Sony Corporation and Media Socket's Uta-tomo (Music Friends) for Best Communications Application. Further winners named at the awards ceremony were 3Gvision's Barcode Reader & Maker as the Best Information Application, Amp'd Mobile's Amp'd Live as the Best Entertainment Application, and 9 Squared's RealTone Jukebox as the Best Ringtone Application. "Each year, Qualcomm is impressed and gratified at the caliber of wireless applications developed by this highly regarded community of BREW publishers and developers. This year's awards program was no different, with an incredible number of entries from around the world representing the latest in mobile content," said Mitch Oliver, vice president of solutions and marketing for Qualcomm Internet Services. "The increased participation and quality of the entries are indicative of the evolution of the BREW solution and its expanding global reach."
