Representatives from graphics chip firm ATI Technologies announced the appointment of mobile entertainment executive Jani Karlsson as the company's new director of strategic planning for ATI's handheld business division, effective immediately. In his new role, ATI representatives note that Karlsson will be responsible for strategic planning of ATI’s Handheld business unit. This will include identifying new markets for ATI products, driving the necessary features into ATI’s product plans, and developing a community of industry groups, partners, carriers and customers for the company's multimedia chips for mobile devices. Karlsson has served in a similar executive capacity with Nokia as head of technology and strategy for its multimedia division. In addition, while at Nokia, Karlsson played a key role in a number of the firm's initiatives, including founding the Nokia Games Summit and acting as a member of the advisory board for GDC Mobile. Prior to joining Nokia, Karlsson also held executive positions at several handheld entertainment pioneers including Mforma and Riot-E. “Jani is well-known and widely respected within the video game and mobile entertainment developer community, and we are thrilled to have his expertise as we grow our Handheld business division,” commented Paul Dal Santo, vice president and GM, Handheld Products, ATI. “Jani’s depth of knowledge about the mobile entertainment industry will be invaluable as we leverage new opportunities to deliver rich multimedia features on mobile handsets.”
