On the same day Nvidia launched its new mobile processors, ATI launched new graphics chips for laptop computers as well -- the Mobility Radeon 9600 line. The Mobility Radeon 9600 family will support DirectX 9, as well as version 2.0 programmable pixel and vertex shaders. Other features include:

  • ATI's SMARTSHADER 2.0 technology, delivering movie-quality effects in next-generation 3D games and applications.

    • OVERDRIVE, a thermally-controlled over-clocking system that uses an on-chip thermal sensor to scale engine speeds based on the notebook thermal environment.

    • HyperM, a matrix of memory bandwidth-optimizing technologies that offers improved graphics performance and longer battery life.

    • SMOOTHVISION 2.1, anti-aliasing technology that uses 6 unique texture samples per pixel and gamma correction, as well as 16X anisotropic filtering.

    • POWERPLAY 4.0, a enhanced version of ATI's power management technology which extends battery life in all applications by dynamically adjusting clock speeds and other settings based on user activity.

    • Support for AGP8X. The 9600 processors will be available in laptop computers in two to three months, according to ATI. ATI also announced its new Mobility Radeon 9700 IGP integrated graphics processor for Intel PCs, offering more memory for higher performance and image quality.
