Codeplay Software Limited today announced that its compiler technology has been chosen by Ageia Technologies, Inc., the first major company in the field of hardware-accelerated physics for games, to power Ageia's Physics Processing Unit, the PhysX chip. “We have developed an outstandingly powerful hardware physics engine,” said Andy Keane, Vice President of Marketing at AGEIA. “In order for developers to fully embrace the technology, we wanted the best compiler technology available. We found that in the widely used Codeplay VectorC.” “One of our strengths is the ability to rapidly produce quality compilers,” Andrew Richards, MD of Codeplay explained: “When AGEIA approached us it quickly became clear that we would have only a few months to design, develop and test the product before developers would use it. We were confident we could meet that deadline.” The project started mid-February 2005, and the first prototypes were shipped within 8 weeks.
